Reviews for this Album
Re: Fumbling Towards Ecstasy
whenever i need to review my attachments in this life i listen to this album. it is extremely difficult not to want to be a part of life when the lyrics are so honest and true.
the lyrics encourage me to deal with all that dwells in my mind as well as with all that is in my life.
i can always get in touch with my feelings when i listen to Sarah. the music speaks to me and it allows me to view my past, present and future life in a way that no other music can.
i listen to a wide variety of genres, including jazz, classical, rock, metal, goth, drone, industrial, but only Sarah's music brings me back down to what is real in my life.
my favorite tracks on this album are fear, plenty, ice, elsewhere, fumbling towards ecstasy and blue. But the whole album is a very important piece in my music collection and in my life.

This album introduced me to the world of Sarah McLachlan's music, and my life (and my own music) was so much better for it. The best way I can describe it is... moods, sensations and emotions crystallized into sounds. Favorite cuts: "Possessions", "Good Enough", "Circle" and "Hold On".

Re: Fumbling Towards Ecstasy
I've been a huge Sarah fan for years. Her music had a tremendous impact on my life during my formative years in the 90's & still holds a special place in my heart. The reason for this lies within Solace and this album, Fumbling Towards Ecstasy.
While "Solace" is my personal favourite album of all time, FTE is quite simply her best work.
FTE was written after an exhaustive 14 month tour for Solace (& after butting heads with Arista about its release), & an eye-opening trip to poverty-stricken Thailand and Cambodia with World Vision. Clearly these experiences gave her lots of fodder for songwriting. The lyrics on this album delve deeper into both positive and negative emotions, and are cryptic enough to have meaning on multiple levels. You can read into these songs in so many ways. Sarah truly turned out a masterpiece here - which she hasn't quite matched since, in my opinion. Lyrics on Laws of Illusion, Afterglow & Surfacing are still excellent, but they're more straightforward, while FTE has layers and layers . . .
The music on this album is also unlike anything else she's ever done. It's her most experimental album for sure. She ranges from rock music on Possession, Hold On and Circle, to Alternative / Electronic tracks like Fear and Wait. The beautiful solo piano version of Possession (a hidden track after Fumbling Towards Ecstasy) puts a 180 degree spin on the song. Two of Sarah's darkest songs, Ice & Fear contrast wonderfully with the triumphant Elsewhere and the light & fluffy Ice Cream.
The last three songs you'll hear; Fear, Fumbling Towards Ecstasy and the piano version of Possession (rumored to be called "Possessed") segue perfectly into one another and close the album wonderfully.
This CD is an emotional roller-coaster, taking you to the lowest lows and the highest highs.
All in all this is one of the most perfect albums I have ever heard. It simply HAS NOT Aged in the 17 YEARS since it's original release in late 1993. It's 12 tracks are so 'complete' together in their arrangement it's ridiculous. It's stood the test of time and is as strong as it ever was.
Not only would I recommend this CD to any potential Sarah McLachlan fan, I would say it's a MUST HAVE for anyone who might even be remotely interested in this genre of music. BUY IT, it's a masterpiece!
Re: Fumbling Towards Ecstasy
The song Good Enough saved my life. I want to thank you for writing it. I was in a horrible place with an abusive mother when one night I saw the video for Good Enough . I have maybe seen the video twice ever since. I went out the next day and had my dad get me Fumbling Towards Ecstasy for my birthday. I was very suicidal but that song became my hope that I was good enough to get better in the future.
That was a lifetime ago now. But you are my go to for music. Your remixes are great your live stuff is great and so are your studio albums.
My husband took me to see you live when we were dating and is always the first to know when your albums come out so he can get them for me. You were also amazing live.
I made a horrible choice in my 20s and the next week Afterglow was released. I had to stop listening to you for a minute because that album really did speak to the place I was in.
I used to sing to channel my feelings but even when I stopped you always seemed to say what was on my mind. Thank you so much Sarah for making such wonderful and passionate music!

is a great album,
Re: Fumbling Towards Ecstasy
While all of Sara's releases are good. I particularly like studio recordings in general. This is one of her finest. I think the planets were aligned perfectly at about this time in her career. The lyrics are very well written. In fact extraordinarily so. The instrumentation is very artistic and a bit eccentric. Which is a big plus. Each song finds a place for the listener to identify with without reaching at all. From one of the most Beautiful writers of our time, with one of the most beautiful voices of all time, Fumbling Towards Ecstasy is a masterpiece. Possession, Elsewhere, Ice and Fear are perfect examples of the Talent Sarah brings to the table and are my favorite songs on the release.
There are no mediocre songs on this CD. I think all of Sara's studio recordings are high points in the stream of music she releases. Fumbling Towards Ecstasy and Surfacing are for me the pinnacle of those high points.
